Listening and learning from bereaved family experience is at the heart of continually improving our care

11 April 2024

We welcome the positive feedback about the quality of care of our services expressed by bereaved families in Ireland’s first ever National End of Life Survey published today (11 April 2024).

Speaking about the survey findings, OLH&CS Interim Chief Executive, Mary Flanagan said: “We are humbled that bereaved families scored our services so highly. Listening and learning from bereaved families’ experience is at the heart of improving our end-of-life care and we will continue to strive to consistently improve our services to ensure all our patients and their families receive the best end of life and bereavement care.

Since receiving feedback, we have carried out several quality improvement projects, including raising awareness about what to expect when a relative/friend is dying as well as providing additional help and support to relatives /friends to help them talk to children/young adults about illness, death and dying.

We would like to thank those families who had a loved one in our care and completed the survey.

We also wish to acknowledge our staff working across our Wicklow, Blackrock, and Harold Cross hospices. The positive feedback is only possible because of our staff’s compassion, professionalism, and dedication in providing hospice healthcare and high-quality bereavement programmes.”

The National End of Life Survey provides important insights into end-of-life care experiences across all healthcare settings in Ireland. For more information and to access the National End of Life Survey report visit: NELS-National-Report-2023.pdf (yourexperience.ie)
