The Community Reablement Unit (CRU) is a unique intermediate care programme, specially designed to help those 65 years of age and over in the local community.
Our goal is to help our patients continue to live independently while improving their mobility and increasing their personal safety. We call this programme ‘reablement’.
Our multidisciplinary team provides the older person with reablement, which aims to lessen the impact of disabling conditions such as joint problems, decreased confidence and balance. The CRU programme also assesses psychological, spiritual and social wellbeing
CRU was set up in 2003 as a tripartite service in partnership with St James’s Hospital and the South-West Area Health Board with the aim that, when patients leave, they will return home with more confidence and strength and enjoy independent living for longer. Each year, over 350 patients from our community are admitted to CRU.
