Read Eileen’s Story

Derek and Eileen Pugh

Eileen has experienced one of the greatest traumas any of us could face – losing the love of her life, her wonderful husband Derek – all too early. He received a completely unexpected bowel cancer diagnosis.

And today, Eileen still grieves, but is still thankful and positive, and still wants to help others.

Derek with his daughter, Aisling and grandchildren, Alba and Charlie.

”The year before Derek’s diagnosis, our youngest daughter, Sinéad, had given me some Sunflower seeds, to connect with her while she was away for the summer. On Derek’s last Father’s Day ten months before his death, our four daughters made beautiful inspirational signs about Sunflowers and
placed them carefully all around the garden.

In a way they were prophetic and became little aids to help with grief and loss but also a celebration of
how we were coping together.

One of them became our family motto: Be like a Sunflower. Face the light and the shadows will stay behind you.’’
