Objectives of Course

  • Outline the concept of palliative care and discuss the role of and referral process to specialist palliative care.
  •  Outline the issues surrounding diagnosing dying and be able to discuss the active dying process with a family.
  •  Develop and enhance skills in the assessment of the person with pain and other common symptoms at end of life.
  • Describe the management of pain and other common symptoms (dyspnoea, agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting and chest secretions) at end of life.
  • Discuss the management of some of the ethical issues such as advanced care planning and artificial hydration within the context of the last days of life.
  • Understand how to manage a sensitive conversation around death and dying with a patient or family at end of life.
